This bag was so fun to make. I can’t believe I really made it. The directions are so easy to follow and very helpful. I think now instead of a purse hanging off my shoulder I’m going to use this bum bag. I might have to make one to match every outfit in my closet.
Loren Lewis –
I never thought I’d say this..but
I LOVE MY BUM BAG!
I’ve been wanting something small to put my phone and keys into, without having to lug around a handbag, especially when going out shopping.
The small size is perfect!
I decided to make a large as well to keep snacks in on my walks. Who doesn’t love a good snack pouch?!
Angel Pooley –
Love this sew, when I went through the instructions I was so daunted but the instructions were so thorough when I finally finished it felt like magic! Thank you once again!
Leigh Ann McDermott –
What a fun and delightful project! A useful bag to carry the things you need while on a walk or a run to the store. Extremely useful to keep your hands free.
Sharon Courtney –
Clear, easy to follow pattern to make the perfect accessory
Susan Anderson –
I love this pattern! As with all Rebecca Page patterns the instructions are very detailed making it easy to follow. I love the option of different sizes making it easy to get the right size for me. I made a large and love that when we go on outings as a family I can put my important items in the bum bag and not need to fuss with my heavy purse.
Clare Bowes –
Great as a bag if you have to use assistance walking (crutches), as a backpack can be awkward to get to at shop counters etc. It can be made as a cross body bag
This is a great pattern for advancing beyond beginner skills. I would advise double checking before cutting the side pieces out that the outer and lining fabrics are positioned correctly for each side (I cut the right side pieces in same direction as my left! So had to recut).
The small is a good size, and if you do the straps the full size of each piece, this can make a nice cross body bag too, which is how I intend to use mine, as I need assistance to walk with crutches – this will make it so much easier to have a bag, other than a back pack!.
Don’t use thick padded interfacing for both outer and lining pieces, it’ll be too hard to turn through. My next one will have a padded out back, and outer front bottom, I am going to do the large next.
Great quick project, longest part is the turning out, and if making adjustable straps, getting them set correctly before final sewing.
It comes in large & small, although don’t be fooled the small is a fab size.”

I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone just starting out sewing but if you’re adventurous this bag is for you. The small size is nearly as large as a small backpack but Rebecca Page is so generous, both small and large are included in the pattern. Yay!
Stephanie Springer Leddy –
This was a quick sew, very easy to cut and make up. The small size is plenty roomy to hold a wallet, keys and phone for a quick jaunt…I can see this being ideal for heading out and about with my kiddos, so I can keep my “essentials” close at hand when also juggling a diaper bag, stroller, and small children!
Jenny Gomez –
This was a really quick and easy sew and a great scrap buster! I was pleasantly surprised at how much space the final bag had!
Pamela Stump –
An easy sew that makes a slim bag to mix and match with all your outfits! I made a size small, and it somehow appears to be bigger on the inside than on the outside. It has plenty of room for the essentials with room left over. Great for shopping or going on walks! Try it on before finalizing the length of the straps – they are generously long.
Marietjie Goosen –
This is such a quick sew and because it is so quick to sew makes it the perfect “last minute” gift to sew. Love that it gives you two size options plus option to choose between webbing and fabric straps.
Kainui Nihipali –
The large bum bag has a lot of options & can be hacked to what you need. It is an easy sew but may seem intimidating because of the different notions required. The bum bag is great! I love that it can be worn on the waist or hips and over the shoulders.
Katie Weatherly –
I enjoyed this sew very much and look forward to making many more.
Samantha Burton –
This is definitely a satisfying sew in the end. There are many steps that will test your patience, but they are totally worth it. I love this pattern and can’t wait to make more.
You will want to use a heavyweight needle to get through all the layers and take your time. Slow and steady!
Debbie Prince –
Loved making this bag, was quick and not complicated. Didnt think i would be bum bag wearer but this bag has definately changed my mind 🙂
Gabriella Hägglund –
I made a colourful bum bag and it’s such a fun and practical bag. Used it for a long walk with my dog and can easily put all I need in it.
Alexandria Phillip –
Love this bag! It was a super quick sew and love that it looks more modern than the typical waist bag. I cant wait to take it hiking and fishing to carry my stuff hands free!
Agnes Robinson –
It is a fun pattern but a little hard at the end when you turn out the final product at the last step.
Amy Kaczenski –
I have been looking for a bum bag for over a year and nothing looked right or came in the fabric I wanted! This pattern is perfect! Not bulky, adjustable and fits my wallet and phone with extra room!
Grace Elliott –
I am sew excited to use my new Bum Bag! The pattern was mostly easy… sewing around the corners using interfaced canvas was challenging, but very rewarding. I’d been saving my fabric for a fun sew, and I am so happy I did. The zip was not bad to place, and the finished product is great. I can’t wait to take it on a spin to the grocery store or walking through our neighborhood.
Nicole Flanagan –
I really love this bag! I was a little sceptical about the size from photos but it is actually the perfect size. I love the way it’s constructed to hide all the raw seams and it can all be sewn with the sewing machine.
Aune Wood –
This bag goes nice around the waist or over the shoulder. The small is still big enough for a phone and lots of snacks and other things.
Kirsty Bucholz –
What an awesome little bag. So easy to make, and so useful!
Shauna Richards –
I made one and I want to make SO MANY MORE! This pattern is so fun and comes together quickly. The pattern is great as is but I can picture so many ways to make small changes for a different look. It also leads to a big open space for decoration if you use a plain fabric. One of my favorite parts is that I could use mostly scraps so I didn’t to go out and buy any new fabric. This is probably my new favorite scrap buster!
Kyra Delaney –
I enjoyed making this and the directions were very straightforward. Only thing I would change is measuring your strap instead of doing the recommended as I had to cut a bunch off. Word of warning the layers can get a bit thick (I used interfaced vinyl for a fake leather look) which skipped some stitches. Overall though it was a great sew.
Pamela Turner Munnerlyn –
I LOVE this bag. It was perfect to take to the store today so I didn’t have to put my purse in the basket and it fit under my jacket. I will be making one for when we go camping and one to use when I walk. I am in love with the bag and it is pretty.
Jessica Kaiser –
This was an easy sew from start to finish! I consider myself a beginner sewer (with some basic knowledge) and I’ve never attempted a project like this before – and it turned out great! Instructions were clear and easy to understand. Pattern pieces were simple and easily came together. It took me about 3 hours from start to finish (with a few interruptions from kids!). I will definitely be making more.
Deepthi Gunasheker –
Very quick and easy sew. Perfect project to pass an hour!!!
Patricia Beidegårdh –
Love it! It Will be the perfect bag on all our mini trips in the summer!
Lisa Corriveau –
The bum bag goes together in just a few hours, creating a simple, functional, yet cute way to carry a few essentials. The pattern would be easy to customize to make it your own unique style. I like the options to make straps of the same fabric & two different sizes. I’m sure I’ll be making more of these!
Jennifer Lichak –
This bag is the updated cool version of the fanny pack from my youth! With fabrics that you love this bag is useful, gorgeous and so much fun.
Melissa D –
Such an easy sew and it comes together beautifully. I love the end result.
Abby Villarreal –
This was a fun sew! I made it difficult for myself by using a thicker upholstery fabric AND an outdoor fabric, but it came together relatively quickly. This bag could be used for its intended purpose by wearing it around the waist, or forego the buckles and sew the straps together to make a sling-type bag.
Tiffany Amos –
I was so over the moon to get this pattern because I have been waiting for something like this . Thank you so much Rebecca Page . This pattern is straight to the point with very clear instructions . I made an accidental hack but after wearing it as a crossover bag I feel in love even more . You rock!
Heidi Gray –
So much fun! While this pattern was a little fiddly, I couldn’t stop until it was done. An awesome final product
Yolonde Bates –
Great pattern to sew. 2 sizes…the large is LARGE has plenty of room. Not a difficult pattern but some knowledge would be an advantage
Laura Murray –
I really enjoyed making the bumbag. It’s a quick and easy sew, and you can style it in so many ways.
Kat Churchill –
So quick and easy, plenty of room for all of your needs!
Stephanie Koehler –
What a great bum pattern. Really like that it’s more of a square. Great room on the inside. Great instructions and easy to put in the zipper.
Courtney Palmer –
Sew amazing! Super quick, super cute! This versatile little bag can be worn either on your hip, across your chest or back and even (with some small modifications) could be attached to a belt, your thigh or made into a shoulder bag. 5/5
Nadia Cadby –
Great pattern, attaching the back was a challenge and a lesson learned – several lessons on this one actually and I loved it. ‘Birthing’ took a while and was rather harsh on my nails but I used oilcloth and duck cloth so fairly thick.
Heather Gratton –
Wow, this is a really well explained pattern that truly makes a large bum bag! Ideal to use as a cross body bag as well, with enough room to make a practical handbag. My tip would be to use a jeans needle though as there’s a few spots where you’re sewing through quite a lot of layers. Well worth the money and sewing time.
Kathryn Johnson –
Forget the stigma of a Fanny pack, this in a Bum Bag by RP and it’s large, roomy, comfortable. Great to take on hikes, shopping, or on holiday.
