When it comes to dress patterns, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, consider the style. Do you want a fitted dress or a more relaxed look? Is it for a specific occasion, or everyday use?

Types of Dress Patterns

One of the most popular is the A-line dress. This dress has a fitted bodice and then flares out from the waist, creating an A-shape silhouette. This style is flattering on all body types and can be dressed up or down, making it a versatile wardrobe staple.

Another popular style is the wrap dress. This look wraps around your body and ties at the waist, creating a figure-flattering shape. Wrap dresses are perfect for day or night, and can be made in a variety of fabrics, from light and airy cotton to heavier silk blends.

Whatever your preferred look, there’s a dress sewing pattern out there that’s perfect for you!

Dress Pattern FAQs

What are the easiest dress patterns to follow?

If you are a beginner, or looking for a quick sew, we would recommend either sewing a simple shift-style dress or going for a dress using knit fabric.

A shift-style dress pattern is quite loose fitting so it’s very forgiving. There’s generally only side seams, sleeves and hemming to do so it’s also quick to sew.

A knit dress is stretchy so it’s much easier to fit to your body. While in a woven dress you’ll need to adjust for a larger or smaller bust for example, in a knit dress it’ll stretch around your body shape more easily.

Where can I download patterns for free?

What patterns are timeless?

Simple silhouettes tend to be the most timeless sewing patterns. Shift dresses, a-line and classic styles mean they’ll be wearable year after year (and you’ll want to make them in multiple fabrics and colors!).

How many yards of fabric do I need to make a dress?

The quantity of fabric you’ll need for a dress pattern depends heavily on the style and size you want. For a simple a-line style dress for a child, you will likely need less than a yard. For a simple knee-length adults dress, it’s usually around 1-2.5 yards. For a dramatic maxi length style the pattern might require more like 5-8 yards.
